21 Jump Street (2012) Review
I’ve been reading a lot of positive reviews of this movie, but I have to disagree with how positive they are. Were there funny moments in this movie? Yes. However, I also thought there were also a handful of jokes that were awkward or a little too cheesy/corny for me. I’m not saying this movie is so awful no one should watch it, because I can see people enjoying this movie. I just don’t know if I’d recommend watching it in theaters. I also don’t know if I’d give it a high a rating as I feel a lot of critics are giving it. If I could go back in time, I would have saved my money and waited for this movie to become available on rental or online streaming.
I think I read in some Entertainment Weekly interview (can’t remember with who or what article and issue specifically), but I think I remember reading that the original script was a bit more serious, but then Jonah Hill came on board and they realized the movie wasn’t going to turn out to be anything but comedic. I couldn’t help laughing when I read that article—it came out I think a week or two before the movie was released in theaters, and I admit that after reading it I became more curious about seeing the movie.
I’ve never watched the original series, so I don’t think I can really give an opinion about whether or not fans of the original will dislike it or hate it. I’m sure a case could be made for either.
Anyway, here’s my ratings breakdown for this movie:
Re-watch Factor: **
FINAL VERDICT: C-
In the end, I don’t really have too much else to say about this movie. I will say though that I am eagerly looking forward to this Friday for The Hunger Games. I’m not sure I’d watch the movie for Catching Fire or Mockingjay, since I didn’t enjoy those books as much, but if the trailer for those seems promising, I might change my mind and give them a shot. The first book in the series though was a great read, so hopefully the movie meets my expectations.
Not sure when I’ll be writing my next entry, but see you all then!
